Polepiece Spacing
One of the most common technical questions we get asked is "what is the most appropriate polepiece spacing of pickup for my guitar"?
The trouble started in the 50s with the development of the two most popular electric guitars in the world - the Fender Stratocaster and the Gibson Les Paul. As you will see from the table the centre-to-centre distance of the outer polepieces on a Les Paul was 49.3mm and for the Fender Stratocaster it was 52.9 mm - a difference of 3.6 mm. Both guitars were designed and manufactured using Imperial dimensions of course and it makes more sense when expressed in those units - 1 15/16" for a Les Paul and 2 5/64" for the Fender Strat. The manufacturers simply chose different string spacings at the bridge and therefore had to choose different polepiece spacings to match. All the original pickups had the same dimensions regardless of whether they were used in the bridge, middle or neck positions for ease of manufacture.
Today, recognising that humbuckers are very often fitted to Strat type guitars or guitars fitted with Tremolos - Floyd Rose or otherwise - the manufacturers try to cater by producing 'Standard' or 'Wide' spaced humbuckers. However, the dimensions are not the same for all manufacturers.
Seymour Duncan makes predominantly Standard spaced pickups but does make a small range of wide-spaced 'Trembuckers'. The standard pickups are very similar to an original Gibson PAF and the Trembuckers are very similar to an original Fender Strat.
DiMarzio makes predominantly F-spaced (wide) pickups. However, their standard spaced pickups are slightly narrower than an original Gibson humbucker. Additionally their F-spaced pickups are a little bit wider than an original Gibson humbucker and significantly narrower than a Strat pickup's spacing, as a compromise. They recommend their Standard spaced pickups for genuine Gibsons (not Epiphones) and F-spaced for everything else. With the table we've shown you can mix and match pickups to make sure eveything lines up.
We all remember where we were when we heard Eddie Van Halen for the first time. His home modified Kramer 'Frankenstein' used an original Gibson PAF mounted under a Floyd Rose. The pickup polepiece spacing is noticeably narrower than the string spacing and is obvious on some photographs - but it didn't hold Eddie back! It's more of a cosmetic issue than anything else. |
