Transistor Distortion
The earliest distorrtion pedals - Fuzz Face, Tube Screamer, etc - were transistor based designs made to enable players to get a pleasing distortion sound out of the large valve amplifiers of the era. Modern transistor based designs give a broad spectrum of distortion efects from mild edge to buzz saw. It's now possible to get distortion pedals for bass guitars - check out the Pro Co Juggernaut!

Tube Distortion
Tube distortion units use genuine tubes - usually the 12AX7 pre-amp tube that was actually used in all the classic amp designs - to give your sound a natural valve distortion.
Ckeck out the new Seymour Duncan SFX-03 Twin Tube Classic which iwon Guitar magazine's pedal of the year in 2007.
