What makes a great vintage humbucker? A soft magnetic field, sweet tone, a perfect balance between warmth and clarity, the ability to go from clean to distorted by pick attack alone. There are many pickups that capture some of these qualities, but we wanted to build them all into one pickup, and this is it. Totally redesigned for 2008, we bring you the new DiMarzio PAF® available in standard or F-spacing. Partly based on the pickups in Larry DiMarzio's own 1959 Les Paul and partly on our own patented technology, the PAF® will perform equally well in the neck or bridge position, just as the best humbuckers from the '50s did.
Want to go totally retro? This PAF® in standard spacing only comes with authentic vintage bobbins in glossy black and single conductor wiring as standard. Options include vintage "Patent Applied For" long-legged nickel-silver base and your choice of polished and plated or vintage worn cover.

Tech Talk: There is no reference standard for the sound of a humbucker from the 1950s. All of them had variations in output and tone, and these differences could be quite large. Recently, we have focused our research on making pickups with warm highs and bright lows. This combination is only found in our favorite vintage humbuckers, and it’s really good for a pickup intended for both the neck and bridge positions. It allows the bass strings in the neck position to avoid muddiness, and the treble strings in the bridge position to be warm and not brittle.

DiMarzio Dual Sound (DP101 and DP101F)
Take a Super Distortion® add a mini-switch and 4-conductor wiring for parallel and single-coil operation and you have the Dual Sound®.The extra flexibility puts cleaner, crisp tone choices at your control. Lighten up on the lead tone in parallel operation, then roar back in with the standard series position. Use the single-coil mode along with the neck or middle pickup for chopping rhythm tones. If you need brighter, more transparent sounds from your bridge or neck pickup without sacrificing wide, singing crunch, the Dual Sound® nicely fills the bill. Recommended for the bridge position on solidbody guitars.
The Dual is the original 4-conductor version of the Super Distortion®. Originally, the main purpose of 4-conductor wiring was to switch from series to parallel modes. It is now popular in bridge position H-S-H pickup arrangements, where it can split to single-coil in combination with a middle position pickup like the Blue VelvetTM. This combination creates very Strat®-like sounds, because the warm tone and high output of the Dual allow single-coil mode to balance with most single-coils.

DiMarzio X2N (DP102)
The X2N is a take-no-prisoners, in-your-face humbucker. Twin, wide-bar pole pieces give the X2N a nasty, dangerous look - and rightly so. DiMarzio's highest gain pickup excels at thrashing your amplifier into screaming overdrive. Put one in the bridge position for a powerful boost in the voltage the amp sees from your guitar.
The result is a hot sound with relentless drive. If your amp needs to see more gain in order to go over-the-top in the overdrive department, the X2N's output and EQ are focused to slam the signal through with authority. Not that the X2N is completely single-minded: 4-conductor wiring permits single-coil and parallel humbucking operation for a wide selection of hot, musical sounds.
Recommended for bridge position on solidbody guitars.

DiMarzio Super 2 (DP104 and DP104F)
If you love the sound of a Super Distortion in the bridge and you like hot neck pickups too, try a Super 2. The Super 2 takes the classic Super Distortion sound and slides the EQ up in favor of the high-end, so its brighter top and lighter bottom work to balance out the darker, overtone-heavy information up by the fingerboard.
The Super 2 is just the pickup to clean up the overdrive sound of a mud-heavy 24-3/4 in. scale, 2-humbucker guitar. Add snap to a dark sounding 25-1/2 in. bolt-on. It works great in the bridge or the neck.
Recommended for neck position with equal or higher-power bridge pickup. Bridge position with equal or lower-power pickup (PAF Pro, Fred, Evolution Neck). The standard colour is black. DiMarzio Super 3 (DP152)
Primarily a bridge position pickup designed for solidbody guitars, it's similar to the Super Distortion with more midrange grind and a chopped treble. Perfect for anyone who plays their amp with scooped mids and intense overdrive. The top end is very dark and the low end isn't muddy. With this pickup you can crank the bass and the treble on your amp and get both scream and crunch.

New for 2009!! Steve Morse Bridge (DP200) & Neck (DP205) Humbuckers
Steve Morse has a unique approach to playing guitar, and we designed his pickups to match his technique. Steve commonly switches between pickups mid-solo - playing the neck pickup on the high notes and the bridge pickup on the lows - so both pickups must be evenly-balanced over the entire fingerboard. The Steve Morse Model™ Bridge delivers high output and a strong attack centered on the mids. It is also designed to give more definition when Steve plays harmonics. We engineered the Steve Morse Model™ Neck specifically for this purpose, with a dark, smooth sound that is clean and uncompressed.
Tech Talk: Steve's neck model has a very specific sound, which is almost exactly the opposite of his bridge pickup in every way - it has low output and a warm, very smooth, almost flat attack. The DC resistance spec is very high, but the magnet is not strong, and this combination accounts for the unusual mix of dark tone and low output.
The Steve Morse Model™ Bridge was DiMarzio's first artist signature pickup. It is almost exactly the opposite of the neck model. It has a lot of power and a strong upper mid-range peak which makes the low notes really pop with a hard pick attack. It has relatively low DC resistance for a high-output pickup, so the lows are very tight. They don't sound muddy even with very high gain amps.

DiMarzio D-Activator -X Bridge (DP222)
The DiMarzio X2N Bridge Model DP102BK has been the top choice for all-out power for nearly 30 years. DiMarzio has developed totally new ways to combine power with clarity, which first resulted in the D Activator™. The D Activator-X™ Bridge Model features the same striking look and high output as the X2N®, but DiMarzio tuned the coils to different frequencies to allow maximum power wide open with a surprisingly clean sound when the volume control is rolled down, even with extreme metal and high-gain amps. The D Activator-X™ Bridge model features a universal spacing for both standard and F-spaced applications.

Tech Talk: The D Activator-X™ bridge model uses the same bar polepieces and magnet structure as the X2N®, but it's a very different pickup in other ways. Output voltage is slightly lower than the X2N®, and the tuning of the two coils allows the high frequencies to "open up" while still maintaining very strong lows and mids. The D Activator-X™ is also very good for clean, bright sounds in split and parallel modes.

The DiMarzio X2N Model DP102BK has been the top choice for all-out power for nearly 30 years. DiMarzio has developed totally new ways to combine power with clarity, which first resulted in the D Activator™. The D Activator-X™ Neck Model features the same striking look and high output as the X2N, but DiMarzio tuned the coils to different frequencies to allow maximum power wide open with a surprisingly clean sound when the volume control is rolled down, even with extreme metal and high-gain amps. Tech Talk: As you can see from the specs, the D Activator-X™ Neck Model has a lot less output than the DiMarzio D Activator-X Bridge Model DP222BK. What is often forgotten is that strings generate much more output voltage over the neck position because they vibrate more strongly there than over the bridge position, so the neck and bridge models actually balance very well with each other. The neck model also has a weaker magnetic field, so it doesn't interfere with sustain or intonation. Both models were primarily designed for heavy music, but they're also very good for clean, bright sounds in split and parallel modes.

DiMarzio D Activator Neck (DP219 ) & Bridge (DP220)
Active humbuckers have a distinctive sound - powerful, clean, open-sounding, with excellent harmonic overtones and very tight lows. The down side for many players is that they also sound cold, have limited dynamics and run out of headroom when played hard. And of course, they need batteries. In 2006 DiMarzio took a close look at the most popular active neck and bridge humbuckers to see if they could capture all of the good qualities and eliminate the disadvantages. The D Activator™ neck and bridge models are the result. They have the same loud yet clean sound as the active humbuckers players are familiar with, and killer harmonics. DiMarzio Breed Bridge (DP166 and DP166F) and Neck (DP165 and DP165F)
If you've seen Steve Vai perform in the last few years, you may have seen him playing a Jem guitar with the word Pogo taped on the face. Steve wanted one of his instruments to have a fat, classic humbucker sound to contrast with the hotter, screaming Evolution®-equipped guitars. This is the pickup DiMarzio developed for him.
The Breed was designed to warm up and smooth out the sound of 25½ scale trem guitars. It's got a lot more power than a PAF®, but it also has a finer 'touch' than high-output models. Picking hard will generate a lot of voltage, but a softer attack will clean up the sound of an overdriven amp.

DiMarzio EVO2 (DP215 and DP215F)
The original Evolution bridge model did what Steve Vai wanted it to do - kick butt and produce serious scream. Then he wanted something a little more complex - the same basic tone with increased headroom and dynamics, so that the sound kills on 10 and cleans up when the volume is rolled down. With a little less power than the original Evolution, EVO2 balances perfectly with the Evolution neck model and performs equally well with high gain and vintage amps.

DiMarzio Steve's Special (DP161 and DP161F)
Steve's Special is a non-traditional approach to a high-output bridge humbucking design. Hot humbuckers usually concentrate most of the pickup's power in a narrow frequency band for maximum impact. Using DiMarzio's patented dual-resonance design Steve's Special takes the opposite path, spreading the sound over a broad range. Bass and treble frequencies are boosted while the mids are pulled back so the pickup's power doesn't kick a high-gain amp into overdrive as easily. This makes Steve's Special a good choice for both fast soloing and clean chords, because individual notes won't smear together with heavy overdrive, and clean sounds have an almost hi-fi quality.

DiMarzio Mo' Joe (DP216 and DP216F)
Joe Satriani has used the Fred® as his main bridge pickup for years. This year Joe asked us for a hotter and bigger version to replace the Fred® in his new Ibanez guitars. The new model called the Mo’ Joe™ is all about tone and definition. It’s name says it all. It has more power than the Fred®, but it doesn’t sacrifice clarity or dynamics. Additionally, all the harmonics that made the Fred so good are all there ready to jump out at the touch a guitar pick. Having more output makes it a perfect match for the PAF Joe™ in the neck position. The combination delivers great versatility and control from rhythms to solos. Recommended For: Bridge position, solid and semi hollow body guitars.

DiMarzio PAF Joe (DP213 and DP213F)
PAF Joe is the new neck pickup developed for Joe Satriani. Joe wanted a neck position humbucker that combined the best qualities of the PAF Pro with those of a late 50s Gibson humbucker. Joe describes this tone as being "tubular". Through the use of Virtual Vintage technology , clear sounding low frequencies are blended with warm sounding mids and highs, which makes the PAF Joe equally good for chords and single notes. DiMarzio Norton (DP160 and DP160F)
The sound of the Norton is right between the FRED and the Tone Zone. It's got some FRED like harmonic overtones that can only be described as nasty, with more of the power and the mid-range of the heavyweight Tone Zone. The same patented dual resonance design used in the FRED and The Tone Zone delivers a sound that is hotter and "bigger" than any Vintage model but not as loud as a distortion class humbucker. Norton might be DiMarzio's most versatile bridge pickup. Combine it with a wide choice of neck pickups like the Air Norton, PAF, PAF Pro and Air Classic.

DiMarzio Air Zone (DP192 and DP192F)
The best way to describe the Air Zone is to describe it as a Vintage version of the Tone Zone. It's got the same low string-pull as the other Airbuckers for singing sustain , plus it has the big bass response and cool harmonics of the Tone Zone, with extra sensitivity and control. It's a great match for very hot amps, allowing the player to take advantage of massive pre-amp gain without turning the sound to mud or fuzzy noise. It's also a great pickup for Jazz players who want to get that hollow-body, arch-top sound from a solid guitar, and it offers exceptionally good spli and series/parallel capability.

DiMarzio Air Classic (DP190 and DP191)
The Air Classic™ goes beyond vintage to create the ultimate PAF sound. Instead of simply copying the design of 50's humbuckers by using Alnico II or aged Alnico V magnets, the patent-applied-for magnet structure not only reduces string-pull but increases harmonic overtones and sensitivity to pick attack. This means there is more control over the musical subtleties that allow good players to create their own individual sounds.
Recommended for: Neck position on all solidbody, semi-solid and hollow-body guitars. Bridge position when clean, lower output sound is required.
50's humbucker sound with patented low-pull magnet structure for richer harmonics and greater sustain. The DP190 is clean and tight in the neck position, sparkling in the bridge. The DP191 is a little rounder and hotter. Either can be used as a bridge pickup in combination with single-coils, where their relatively low output will balance with the neck & middle positions. DiMarzio Bluesbucker (DP163 and DP163F)
The DiMarzio Bluesbucker® looks like a standard humbucker, but sounds like a P90 and cancels 60-cycle hum as effectively as the average humbucker. This means any guitar with standard size humbuckers can now have the sound of P90s without altering the guitar in any way and without noise. Patented Virtual Vintage® and Airbucker™ technology let the Bluesbucker® "see" a narrow string window like a true single-coil, making it extremely sensitive to playing dynamics. When a pair of these pickups are on together, they achieve the open, slightly hollow sound that two single-coils produce. The coil with the 6 adjustable slotted poles is the "hot" coil. The coil with the solid poles is along for the ride to cancel hum and look cool. Since one coil is doing most of the work, the direction the Bluesbucker® is installed makes an obvious difference in the sound. When the hot coil is closest to the bridge, the sound is brighter; towards the neck is warmer. Even though the look is a little nontraditional, we like the sound of the bridge pickup "backwards" (with the screw coil towards the neck). With a Bluesbucker® in the neck position with the screw coil towards the bridge (also "backwards") the combined sound is Tele-like. With the neck pickup in the more traditional direction, the combination is like two P-90s. The Bluesbucker® comes with special wiring instructions.

DiMarzio PAF Classic (DP194 and DP195)
Pickup covers are back! They protect pickups from damage and they provide extra shielding against noise. There is one drawback: since all metal covers cause a loss of presence, some of the attack is gone. Using DiMarzio's patented AirbuckerTM technology, they created a pickup that sounds like the best humbuckers of the 50s' without any compromise in sound. Like the Air ClassicTM, the tone is subtle and complex. DiMarzio wax-dips the PAF Classic® twice (the second time with the cover installed) to eliminate microphonic noise, and 4-conductor cable allows parallel and coil-splitting options. DiMarzio EJ Custom (DP211 and DP212)
Although Eric Johnson is best known as a Strat player, he has always played humbucker-equipped guitars as well. After getting a new 1959 Les Paul re-issue, Eric asked DiMarzio if it could be made to sound like an old Gretsch Country Gentleman guitar, and they said, "No problem!" The pickups they designed are exact replacements for standard, full size humbuckers. They are bright with great presence without sounding thin. When Eric tried them, he said they were almost as clear-sounding as Strat pickups, and he was surprised at how well they sounded with heavy distortion, because no matter how overdriven the sound, it did not become muddy. Recommended for: All positions, solid, semi-solid and hollow-body electric guitars
If you look at the DC Resistance specs for these pickups, you will see they're very similar to PAF®-style models. However, their performance is very different in two important areas. They have less power and much more treble response than "vintage" humbuckers. In fact, treble response is comparable to that of typical single-coils, but since bass response is still very solid, the EJ Custom™ isn't thin-sounding. It's outstanding for chords and fingerpicking, and has exceptional definition for soloing, even with extreme amounts of distortion.

DiMarzio Humbucker from Hell (DP156 and DP156F)
Because a conventional humbucker senses the string at two different places, it cancels some frequencies along with the hum. What if there were a humbucker that canceled fewer frequencies? It would be brighter and cleaner: almost glassy-sounding. In other words, it would almost sound like a Strat pickup, but with about the same power as a PAF. DiMarzio created The Humbucker From Hell primarily as a neck pickup. You won't believe how much it will open up the sound in the neck position of a Les Paul, and it has an almost acoustic quality in the neck spot of a bolt-on guitar. Why is it called THe Humbucker From Hell? Try it in the bridge position with a bright amp--but put in your earplugs first, and don't say you weren't warned.

DiMarzio Virtual Hot PAF (DP214 and DP214F)
For the vintage humbucker player who wants more: more power, more more attack, more punch. The Virtual PAF proved that a pickup could be sweet sounding and gritty at the same time. The Virtual Hot PAF is less about sweet and more about attitude. Play it hard and the sound jumps out of the speaker, but the singing quality of the best vintage humbuckers is still there, and coil splitting works really well too.
